This special topic issue of 'Developmental Neuroscience' discusses among other topics new genetic mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders, advances in gene therapy and the use of antisense oligonucleotide therapies. It includes a series of review articles and commentaries based on the proceedings of the 1-day symposium "Towards Targeted Therapy for Neurodevelopmental Disorders," held online on July 31, 2020. Part I of this special topic issue (Models and Mechanisms) focuses on advances in the generation and application of experimental model systems to investigate pathomechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders. Part II (Therapeutic Strategies) highlights advances in human genetics as well as provides targets for therapeutic modulation and the development of novel treatment strategies. This publication will be of great interest to clinicians and basic and translational scientists interested in neurodevelopment, neurogenetics, neurodevelopmental disorders, and emerging attempts at targeted therapy.
