There are estimated to be around 285 million diabetics (2010) around the world. Approximately 90 % of these have type II diabetes. The number of people affected by this disease will continue to rise rapidly in the future, especially in Asia and Africa. Some of the most serious complications of diabetes are diseases of the eye.

This volume analyses the scientific interface between endocrinology and ophthalmology in order to reveal ways to improve cooperation between diabetologists and ophthalmologists. It examines epidemiological data from industrial nations, newly industrialised countries and third world countries, presents the latest results of basic research into diabetes, discusses the eye as a biomarker of diabetic microangiopathy and neuropathy, and looks at treatment for diabetes now and in the future.
