This superbly illustrated book provides a thorough, up-to-date overview of diagnostic breast imaging and therapy. Drs. Elizabeth Morris, Michael Fuchsjäger, and Thomas Helbich, three experts in the field, have collaborated with colleagues from their institutions and selected medical centers to share their expertise. The coverage ranges from basic information on imaging technologies and interventional equipment and how to use them optimally to the application of advanced high-end techniques for screening and assessment in any given professional environment. Readers will find clear instruction on the various breast interventional procedures guided by stereotaxis, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging in wide clinical use. The management of patients with ductal carcinoma in situ and high-risk breast cancer is considered separately. Furthermore, the role of minimally invasive therapy is examined, and advice is provided on post-therapy evaluation, including breast implants. A comprehensive diagnostic atlas with hundreds of images completes this volume and addresses the spectrum of various clinical situations.
Prof. Dr. Michael Fuchsjäger is a Professor of Radiology and Chairman of the Department of Radiology at the Medical University of Graz, Austria. Michael Fuchsjäger received his MD degree from the University of Vienna and completed his residency at the Medical University of Vienna's Department of Radiology. He was a research scholar at the Department of Radiology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA and he served as Chair of the Clinical Imaging Institute at Al Ain Hospital in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Prof. Fuchsjägers academic and clinical interest is primarily focused on breast radiology and intervention, including minimally invasive therapy as well as assessment of 4D blood flow and tissue characterization by cardiac MRI. He serves on various committees for national and international radiology and senology societies, first and foremost the European Society of Radiology, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors as the Chairman of the Board and hosted his European Congress of Radiology as president of the society in 2021.
Prof. Fuchsjäger has published more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, held over 200 scientific lectures and poster presentations and presented more than 600 educational lectures at the most prestigious radiology conferences worldwide over his career. In addition, he has been given over 100 awards.
Since 2012 he has been living in Graz with his wife and five children.
Elizabeth Morris M.D. is Professor and Chair of Radiology at the University of California, Davis (UCD) School of Medicine. Dr. Morris graduated summa cum laude from UCD in Biochemistry and received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She completed her residency at Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) and a body/breast imaging fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) where she remained on faculty until December 2020 where she was the Chief of the Breast Imaging Service and Larry Norton Endowed Chair.
Dr. Morris is a fellow of the American College of Radiology (ACR), Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) and International Society of MR in Medicine (ISMRM) and is past president of the SBI. She is the inaugural Equity Diversity & Inclusion officer of the ISMRM and co-chair of the Women of ISMRM (WISMRM).
Her research focus is on how best to use newer techniques such as MRI for early breast cancer detection and to improve the workup of breast lesions. In collaboration with her colleagues, she has written over 230 papers, 40 chapters, and 5 books about breast disease with an emphasis on the use of MRI. She has lectures widely both nationally and internationally at over 320 conferences. She has mentored over 50 international research fellows. She has grants from NCI, RSNA, Komen Foundation, and Breast Cancer Research Foundation. She has authored a book 'Breast MRI: Diagnosis & Intervention'. Her recent research efforts have involved looking at imaging biomarkers to assess risk and treatment response.Thomas H. Helbich MD, MSc, MBA, is Professor of Molecular Imaging and Vice Chair of the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image guided Therapy of the Medical University of Vienna. He received his medical degree at the Medical University of Vienna in 1989 and completed his residency at the Department of Radiology at the Medical University of Vienna in 1996. He was a research fellow at the Department of Radiology, Center of Molecular Imaging of the University of California in San Francisco from 1996 to 1998. From 2007 to 2008 he served as Division Head of Breast Imaging and Professor of Radiology at the University of Toronto.
The main field of research interest are clinical and experimental investigation on a cellular and sub-cellular level to diagnose cancer, particular breast cancer, earlier, more accurate, minimal and/or non-invasively. With his team he developed and optimized several methods on the basis of MRI, different molecular imaging tools, as well as minimal invasive diagnostic techniques for oncologic imaging. Prof. Helbich published more than 320 scientific articles. He is PI or Co-PI of several research grants among them four EU grants (VH-PRISM, HYPMED, MURAB, CANCER SCAN). He has been honored with several national and international awards. He serves on various committees for national and international societies and was president of several medical societies (EUSOBI, ÖGS etc.).
