This book will serve as a one-stop, reference manual to understand the basic concepts of dental implant design, the related microbiome, research models and current concepts as well as futuristic perspectives in implant surface modification. The manual-like design including colorful illustrations and important critical questions will help researchers and advanced students in understanding the contemporary status and in designing studies for innovative treatments of dental implant infections. Considering the microbiome of dental implant related environment in health and disease is imperative to design strategies to good practice and prevention of infections around implants. This monograph will serve as a single reference material which links the interdisciplinary aspect of the dental implants covering material sciences, engineering and biological aspects, thus effectively bridging the gap between engineering and oral health sciences.

Prasanna Neelakantan is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Endodontology and Assistant Dean (Research) at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong. With more than 90 scientific publications in high impact peer reviewed journals, his h-index now stands at 24. His papers have been cited about 2500 times. He has delivered more than 50 international invited/keynote lectures and mentors research groups in several parts of the world. He is a recipient of many awards and honours including the International Association for Dental Research Innovation in Oral Care Award in 2018 and 2021, and the International Association for Dental Research Joseph Lister Award in 2018. His research group focuses on biofilm biology, nano-therapeutics, collagen crosslinking and minimally invasive root canal debridement.

Adline Princy Solomon is a Professor in the School of Biotechnology at the SASTRA Deemed University who has 16 years of professional teaching/research experience post Ph.D. She is the Group Leader at Quorum Sensing Laboratory (QSL) and holds a core position in the India Biofilm Society. To her credentials, she is a recipient of young scientist award from Indian Society of Life sciences, INSA and DST, Govt. of India for her contributions in research. Being a molecular biologist by training, her research interest primarily focuses on infectious diseases, as well as looking at novel drugs as alternative anti-infective therapies manipulating Quorum sensing and host pathogen relationships using inter-disciplinary approaches.
