Life is a struggle on both land and in the sea and many animals have developed chemical weapons, for attack or defence. These toxins, venoms or poisons, are diverse in both structure and function and are delivered to victims in equally diverse ways. Humans frequently encounter these venomous and poisonous animals and all too often suffer unpleasant consequences including death, be it from a bite or sting causing envenoming, or poisoning after eating the wrong animal.

Dietrich Mebs
Prof. Dr. phil. nat. Dietrich Mebs studierte Biologie und Biochemie in Frankfurt am Main mit einem Auslandssemester am Instituto Butantan in São Paulo, Brasilien, und promovierte 1968 mit einer Arbeit über die Biochemie der Schlangengifte. Nach der Promotion war er zunächst wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Institut für Rechtsmedizin der Universität Frankfurt und ging 1970 für ein halbes Jahr als einer der ersten Postdocs nach Japan, wo er am Institute for Protein Research der Universität Osaka die Struktur eines Schlangengift-Toxins, des alpha-Bungarotoxins, aufklärte. 1979 habilitierte er im Fach Rechtsmedizin und wurde 1985 zum Honorarprofessor ernannt. Neben seiner forensischen Tätigkeit in der Toxikologie und Spurenanalytik sind seine Forschungsschwerpunkte die Biologie und Biochemie tierischer und pflanzlicher Gifte. Auf zahlreichen Reisen in die Tropen hat er Material für seine Forschungen gesammelt. Dietrich Mebs ist Autor und Koautor von mehr als 300 wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten, hat mehrere Bücher geschrieben (Gifte im Riff; Gifttiere; Heilende Gifte, bei der Wissenschaftliche Verlagsgesellschaft Stuttgart. Leben mit Gift, beim S. Hirzel Verlag) und ist Mitherausgeber des Handbook of Toxinology (M. Dekker, New York).
