This book is unique in its approach, covering the impact of virtual endoscopy and 3D reconstruction on surgical modalities and perioperative airway options. Airway management is an essential skill that is practiced daily by almost all anesthetists across the world. Most of the anesthesia-related morbidities and mortalities in the perioperative period are associated with respiratory complications, either of airway or pulmonary problems. Thus, the prediction of airway complications in perioperative period has been an active research field for many decades and is a cornerstone of perioperative anesthesia assessment and management.

Virtual endoscopy & 3D reconstruction is a novel, reliable and non-invasive airway assessment tool that is able to reconstruct simple CT images to provide a clear view of the airway down to the bronchial trees, and offers the highest possible sensitivity, comparable with fiberoptic endoscopic pictures. This revolutionary tool avoids the hazards of invasive airway assessment by fiber-optic bronchoscopy, like bleeding from airway masses, sedation induced airway collapse and other complications. This book is a valuable resource for anesthesiologists, intensivists, surgeons, radiologists, otolaryngologists, medical students as well as residents in training.

Prof. Nabil A. Shallik , MD, is an assistant professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and assistant professor of Anesthesiology and intensive Care at Tanta Faculty of Medicine in Egypt, associate head of anesthesia services in Rumailah Hospital and Ambulatory Care Center, part of Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. He also works as a senior consultant in Anesthesia, ICU and Perioperative Medicine at Hamad General Hospital in Qatar. He has published more than 40 articles in national and international peer-reviewed medical journals including perioperative, pain and airway publications. He is also a reviewer and editorial board member for a number of international peer reviewed medical journals. He is official reviewer for Hamad Medical Research Center (MRC) team. He is the main author of numerous book's chapters and editor of many books. He is a leading researcher in airway management in the Middle East and his research interests mainly focus on perioperative care and on new tools for airway assessment and management.

Dr. Nabil is a pioneer in anesthesia education and a dedicated clinical teacher with more than 20 years of anesthesia practice and 15 years of dedicated anesthesia teaching. Dr. Nabil is a core faculty member of the Anesthesia Residency Program, the first ACGME-I accredited program in the Middle East. He received the Award of Excellence in Medical Education in Qatar and best teaching material award from the International Sleep Surgery Society (ISSS). As a course director for all airway workshops and courses in Qatar Robotic Surgery Center and Itqan Simulation Center, he is continually testing, inventing and tailoring basic and advanced educational modules related to airway skills to suit different health care providers. Dr. Nabil is an active contributor to international anesthesia societies (Airway Management Academy (AMA) and European Airway Management Society (EAMS)), and he received innovation funding from the Academic Health System (AHS) in HMC for the development of three projects: Novel Ultrasound Visible Double Cuff (UVDC) for Endotracheal Tube (ETT); new video-scope (Shalliscope) and Ventilation with View Mask. As a manager he streamlined the clinical service in the ENT anesthesia department, was a major force behind the transformation of the Hamad Medical Corporation into an academic health system, the implementation of electronic medical record, the JCI accreditation of the Corporation and is frequently invited as guest speaker in national and international conferences.
